The Gulf of Mexico oil spill this past April has had far and wider effects than previously anticipated affecting not only wild life, but domestic companion animals as well. because of the financial hardships, huge numbers of pets have been surrendered to already overcrowded shelters. Fortunately, there are many programs in place to help veterinarians support these struggling pet owners. One such program can be found at AVMF.org/gulfcoastpetrelief.

Such a program has allowed the provision of free veterinary services and supplies. In addition, the company Merial, through its Paws to save pets Program, is helping provide such emergency relief after these natural disasters.

Almost 6,000 animals were collected in the area of the spill, but thankfully BP has reported that they were sealing the well for good and that oil was no longer leaking into the gulf.
