Bull terriers have knowing eyes that just seem to beg you to sit down and share your burdens with them. In my book, The Power of Wagging Tails, we share the story of Bull Terrier Rufus, winner of 35 best In show awards and over 750 titles, including champion titles in America, Canada, world, and the Americas competitions. Rufus had an egg-shaped head and triangular eye that drew people to him. After retiring from the show ring, he used his gift visiting injured military personnel at Walter Reed hospital where he didn’t earn more ribbons but definitely won hearts.

When people think about good family dogs, they usually think of golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers, but a recent survey from the UK put the Bull Terrier as top dog. Researchers from the university of Liverpool in the UK surveyed over 1000 elementary school children ages 9 to 10 years old about their pets. The results were recently published in the BMC Veterinary research journal. two in three children said there was a pet in their home, most commonly a dog (37 percent of children), cat (17 percent of children), or a rodent (15 percent of children). among those children with a pet dog, the most popular type of dog was a Bull terrier (including pit bulls and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier), which lived with 27 percent of the children. among individual breeds, the top breed was the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, living with 19 percent of the children. The second most common breed was the Shih Tzu, living with 10 percent of the children.  As expected, children were more attached to their dogs than to other pets, and dogs were most likely to be the “favorite” pet for those with more than one pet at home. children were equally attached to different breeds of dogs included in the survey. That is, children with Bull terriers were not more or less likely to be attached to their dog than children with a Shih Tzu or other types of dogs. The Queen may have her Corgis, but in the UK, the Bull terrier is definitely top dog.
